One Day in Athens

What’s the difference between the Acropolis and the Parthenon in Athens?

The Acropolis and the Parthenon are two amazing landmarks in Athens, Greece, that are closely connected. The Acropolis is a big hill packed with history and features several ancient buildings like temples and fortifications. It’s been a hub of power and worship since way back in the Neolithic Age! The Parthenon, on the other hand, is a beautiful temple sitting right on the Acropolis itself. Built in the 5th century BC, it’s dedicated to Athena and is famous for its stunning Doric architecture and rich historical importance.

I remember my first climb up the hill to see the Parthenon and temples! Can you just imagine everyone walking around in togas? I still picture orators giving lectures and many worshipping the Greek Gods like Zeus and Athena :)– Elle

If you are on a cruise, you likely have one day to explore Athens. My suggestion for this day would be to forget the bus shore excursions and hire a taxi for you and a couple friends to see all the important sites. We used Georges Taxi for a 5-hour tour: https://www.georgestaxi.com . We had Stavros (or Steve)

I would suggest to start early (about 8am) at the acropolis to avoid the crowds and heat. Explore the Parthenon, then visit Hadrian’s Arch and the Temple of Olympian Zeus.

For lunch, head to the Plaka district around noon. There are many delicious cafes there. after lunch stroll through the National Gardens and visit the Panathenaic Stadium. Next explore the Ancient Agora and Monastiraki Square and enjoy the flea market. Make sure to pick a dinner restaurant with a beautiful view of the acropolis at sunset.

Another interesting site to see is the changing of the guards held every hour on the hour at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, located in front of the Hellenic Parliament. If you are in Athens, the most elaborate ceremony takes place every Sunday at 11am. Be sure to get there early to get a good viewing spot.
